Our Mission

At Daily Drop, our mission is simple: to help you explore the world affordably and experience life-changing travel by maximizing miles and points. Our team of travel and credit card experts is here to help you make decisions about which cards belong in your wallet. Based on your travel goals, we offer unbiased advice to help you make the best choices. Keep in mind that our suggestions require responsible credit card use.

Rating Methodology

Here at Daily Drop, we score credit cards using a proprietary formula based on dozens of metrics across six key categories: annual fee, welcome offer, rewards rates, redemption value, benefits & perks, and travel protections. Higher scores indicate better overall value.

We net the annual fee against statement credits you'll likely use and focus on a welcome offer's true return on spending (ROI) rather than just the headline number. We value rewards by their actual worth in cents per point, which is why flexible, transferable points typically score highest. APR is not a standalone scoring category because we recommend paying in full to maximize points and miles, but an intro 0% APR counts as a perk.

Our reviews are editorial and experience-driven. Our team has earned and redeemed millions of miles and points and tested these cards around the world. After all, we would not be Daily Drop if we were not practicing what we preach.

Our Take

McKay MoffittMcKay Moffitt

The Delta SkyMiles Gold is one of the most straightforward airline cards out there. It gives you a solid mix of travel perks and miles without overcomplicating things or charging a crazy annual fee (especially since there's a $0 intro annual fee the first year). It’s a great pick if you fly Delta a few times a year and just want to save a little money, board a little earlier, and check a bag for free. It's nothing flashy, but super practical.

How to make the most of your Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

If you want to squeeze the most value out of this card, your best bet is to use it for Delta flights, hotels, and when chasing elite status.

[.dontreco] We don’t recommend: Using miles for merchandise or gift cards [.dontreco]

The value here is… rough. You’ll usually get less than 1 cent per mile, which isn’t great.

[.sometimesreco] We sometimes recommend: Using miles for Pay with Miles bookings [.sometimesreco]

This gives you about 1 cent per mile, which is decent, especially for last-minute travel, but it’s not the most valuable way to redeem.

[.alwaysreco] We always recommend: Booking award flights (especially international or partner redemptions) [.alwaysreco]

You’ll get the best bang for your miles when you redeem them for flights, especially in premium cabins or with partners like Air France, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic.

Transfer Partners

Delta doesn’t use a traditional transferable currency like American Express Membership Rewards, meaning you earn Delta SkyMiles directly. But you can still use your SkyMiles on Delta’s partner airlines through the SkyTeam alliance and other global partners. A few of the airlines you can book using your SkyMiles include Air France, KLM, Aeromexico, Virgin Atlantic, and others.

Who Should Get The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card?

1. The Delta Fan

If you mostly fly Delta and want to save money without going all-in on status, this card could be perfect for you. You’ll get perks like free checked bags and priority boarding without the steep annual fee of Delta’s higher-tier cards. It’s perfect if you want some special treatment without shelling out for lounge access or MQD boosts.

2. The Occasional Traveler

If you take a couple of trips a year (maybe a summer vacation, a few holidays, or a weekend getaway) this card can easily earn its keep. The baggage perk alone can save you some solid cash. In short, you don’t need to fly often to get real value here. And maybe you're new to travel cards? The SkyMiles Gold is an easy entry point. The first-year annual fee is waived, the benefits are simple, and you’ll start racking up Delta miles quickly on flights, dining, and groceries. It’s a great way to test the waters without overcommitting.

Who Should Not Get The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card?

Here’s a good rule of thumb: You probably shouldn’t own a credit card if you: (1) have a bad credit score, (2) are a non-U.S. resident (for this particular card), and (3) cannot control your spending. If your credit score is low, you'll need to improve it before applying for travel credit cards, as approval for the best ones, like the Delta Gold Amex, is unlikely. Be honest with yourself: if a new credit card will tempt you to overspend, it's best to avoid it. Credit cards are crucial for earning miles and points, but they require responsible use.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does the Delta Amex Gold get lounge access?

No, lounge access is reserved for people with the Delta Reserve Amex or those willing to pay for it. If you want to kick back in a Sky Club, you’ll need a different card or a one-time pass.

Does the Delta Gold Amex have foreign transaction fees?

Nope, the Delta Gold Amex has no foreign transaction fees, making it perfect for your international trips.

Does the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card come with lounge access?

The Delta Gold Amex does not include any lounge access, only the higher-tier Delta Amex cards offer that perk.

Is the Delta Amex Platinum better than the Delta Amex Gold?

It depends on what you’re looking for. The Platinum version is like Gold’s older sibling, and it comes with a companion certificate, a faster path to Medallion Status and extra SkyMiles perks. But it also comes with a higher annual fee, so if you’re not maximizing the extras, Gold might be the sweet spot.

Can I earn MQDs with the Delta Gold Amex?

You can’t earn Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs) with the Delta Gold Amex, so if you're chasing elite status, you should opt for a different Delta card.

Is the Delta Gold Amex’s annual fee worth it?

The Delta Gold Amex easily pays for itself if you check a bag just once or twice a year on Delta.

Can I upgrade my Delta Gold Amex to Delta Amex Platinum?

Yes, if you’re ready to level up, Amex makes it easy to upgrade from the Delta Gold Amex to the Platinum version. Just keep in mind that once you do, your annual fee and benefits will change instantly, so make sure the extra perks are worth it before you make the switch.

Do I get priority boarding with Delta Amex Gold?

Yes, Delta Amex Gold cardholders get Zone 5 priority boarding, which means plenty of time to find bin space and settle into your seat.

Do I get 15% off Delta flights when booking with Amex Gold Delta card?

Yes, with the Delta Gold Amex, you get 15% off SkyMiles award flights when booking through Delta's website or app.
