Card Power Couple: Ultimate Rewards Edition

I’ve got a SUPER fun tip to tell you guys about, but it’s a little tedious… so pay attention. 👨‍🏫

In case you didn’t know, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card has a current welcome offer of: Earn 100,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

In general, this card is pretty freakin’ solid.

But what about those of you who already have this card? 🤔

Well, there’s a way that you can effectively multiply your rewards in certain categories.

This is all thanks to a unique offer on the Chase Freedom Unlimited® card that we’ve told you about a loooong while back… We haven’t talked about it often because, on its own, it’s not that exciting.

But when you pair it with the Sapphire Preferred, it’s a match made in heaven.

Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Freedom Unlimited

How the Chase Freedom Unlimited Earns

Here’s how the Chase Freedom Unlimited® works 👇

This is a cash-back card that earns the following rates:

  • 5% cash back on purchases made through the Chase Travel℠ portal
  • 3% cash back on drugstore purchases and dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery service
  • 1.5% cash back on all other purchases

If you have the Sapphire Preferred, that cash back turns into Chase points.

How the Sapphire Preferred Earns:

  •  5x points on travel booked through Chase Travel℠ (excluding hotel purchases that qualify for the $100 Annual Chase Travel Hotel Credit), on eligible Lyft rides (through 9/30/27), and on eligible Peloton equipment and accessory purchases over $150 (through 12/31/27)
  • 3x points on dining, select streaming services, and online grocery purchases
  • 3x points on top vacation rentals (like Airbnb and Vrbo)
  • 3x points on gas and EV charging
  • 2x points on all other travel
  • 1x points on everything else

As you can see, you can rack up points very quickly in normal, everyday spending categories (like gas, dining out, and online grocery).

Why This Combo Is So Powerful

Again, if you also have a Sapphire Preferred, you can convert the Freedom Unlimited’s cash back into Ultimate Rewards points.

That means:

  • 5% cash back → 5x Chase points
  • 3% cash back → 3x Chase points
  • 1.5% cash back → 1.5x Chase points

You’ll be earning at least 1.5x points per dollar on all non-categorized spending. 🙌

By having these two cards (which have combined annual fees of just $95, btw), you’re unlocking premium earning rates that could take you around the world.

Not bad for a setup that earns transferable points on literally everything.

What Those Points Can Turn Into

Once your points are pooled under the Sapphire Preferred, you unlock Chase’s airline and hotel transfer partners.

One standout option: Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, which Chase frequently runs transfer bonuses to.

When a transfer bonus is live, Virgin points can stretch super far:

  • Business-class flights to Europe can cost as few as 29,000 points one-way
  • Economy flights often price well under what most people expect

In fact, you’d still have 24,000 miles left over after that…

Those 24,000 miles are enough to book you two MORE freaking ROUND TRIPS to Europe in Economy.

Bottom Line

These two cards work incredibly well together.

If you already have one, adding the other can dramatically increase its value.
And if you have neither? This is one of the cleanest, lowest-effort two-card setups out there.

If you don’t have either of them… well… you can always just get both. 🤷🏼‍♂️
