Chase Trifecta: The Ultimate Beginner Credit Card Setup

What Is the Chase Trifecta?

In the points and miles world, you’ll sometimes hear the word “trifecta” being thrown around.

Don’t get intimidated.

We’re simply referring to the practice of using three cards in the same family in tandem. That way, you maximize your points earning across all your purchases.

If someone says, “I have the Chase Trifecta,” that simply means they hold three Chase cards and pool the points they earn from those cards together.

Why do this? Well, each card offers different earn rates in different categories. So by holding cards that each excel in different categories, you can rack up rewards faster and squeeze a lot more value out of every dollar — without spending any extra money.

It’s one of the easiest ways to earn a lot more points from the spending you're already doing.

The Core Chase Trifecta

The most popular version of the Chase Trifecta features these three cards:

Unlike high-fee trifecta setups (like the American Express one that can reach nearly $1,000 annually) the Chase Trifecta comes in at just $95 per year. The Freedom cards earn cash back but can be converted into Chase Ultimate Rewards Points when paired with a Sapphire card, unlocking premium travel redemptions and benefits.

Breaking Down the Cards:

1. Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

This is your core card in the Chase Trifecta, as it allows you to transfer your hard-earned points to Chase’s excellent travel partners. You must hold a Sapphire card (either the Sapphire Preferred or the Chase Sapphire Reserve®) in order to do this.

  • Annual fee of $95.
  • 5x on Chase Travel℠ purchases
  • 3x on dining, gas, top vacation rentals (like Airbnb), streaming, and online groceries
  • 2x on other travel purchases.
  • Provides a $100 annual credit on hotel bookings through Chase Travel℠, effectively offsetting the annual fee.
  • Up to $120 in TSA PreCheck/Global Entry/NEXUS credit every four years.
  • Access to Points Boost, where certain flights and hotels are bookable for up to 1.5 points in the Chase Travel portal.
  • Current welcome offer: Earn 100,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

2. Chase Freedom Unlimited®

Often known as a “catch-all” card, the Freedom Unlimited ensures you’re getting 1.5% cash back on every single purchase. Many people start with this card paired with theSapphire Preferred, creating a powerful points-earning duo.

3.Chase Freedom Flex®

If you’ve already got the duo and want to level up, adding this card to your arsenal is the move. Every quarter, you’ll get access to a new set of categories in which you can earn a tasty 5% cash back. These are often common spending categories, like grocery stores, gas stations, and Amazon purchases.

How the Chase Trifecta Works

Each card in the Trifecta setup plays a strategic role:

  • Use the Freedom Flex for its high 5% cash back rotating categories and travel bookings.
  • Lean on the Freedom Unlimited for everyday purchases with its 1.5% cash back. Anything that doesn’t fit in another bucket gets covered by this catch-all card. 💪
  • Deploy the Sapphire Preferred for gas, vacation rentals, online grocery, dining, and travel-related purchases, then convert all cash back earned from your other trifecta cards into Chase Ultimate Rewards Points.

Combined, these cards cover a wide range of spending categories, allowing users to earn 2 to 5 points per dollar spent while keeping fees low.

Customizing the Trifecta: Mix & Match

While the above cards are the most popular version of the Chase trifecta, you can easily customize the setup with other Chase cards. Two of the other popular cards to swap in and out are:

1. Sapphire Reserve

While its annual fee is steep, this card is perfect for frequent travelers after even more premium perks. It comes with a $300 travel credit*, access to airport lounges, and a host of other statement credits:

  • $795 Annual Fee
  • 8x on all Chase Travel℠ purchases
  • 5x on eligible Lyft rides through September 30, 2027
  • 4x on flights and hotels booked directly
  • 3x on dining at restaurants worldwide, including eligible delivery services
  • Up to $300 Annual Dining Credit (up to $150 in statement credits biannually) for dining at restaurants that are part of Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables. No activation or reservation is required.
  • Up to $500 Credit for stays with The Edit, a handpicked collection of 1,000+ hotels and resorts (up to $250 in statement credits biannually)
  • Hundreds of dollars in other statement credits

*Note: you won’t earn points on purchases covered by this credit.

2.Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card

For business owners, integrating Chase Ink business cards can significantly elevate point earnings. The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card pairs well with the personal Chase cards and allows you to convert cash back into points. Its earning rates and benefits include:

  • 5x on Lyft rides through 9/30/27
  • 3x on the first $150,000 spent on total purchases for these categories each year (then 1X per $1 after): shipping purchases, advertising purchases, internet, cable, and phone services, and (crucially) travel
  • Add employee cards at no additional cost (and help earn rewards faster!)

There’s also the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card and the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card, both $0 annual fee cards. Just note that these cards don’t give you access to transfer partners. If you choose one of these Ink cards, you’ll want to hold a card that does give you access to transfer partners as part of your trifecta setup.

Key Considerations and Tips

While the Trifecta is effective, remember Chase’s 5/24 rule — approval becomes unlikely if you’ve opened five or more credit cards within the past 24 months. Start building the Trifecta one card at a time to meet each card’s welcome offer requirements and avoid negatively impacting your credit score.

In short: the Chase Trifecta is a rewarding setup for beginners and seasoned travelers alike. Nearly everyone on the Daily Drop team has some version of it. Optimizing your cards is one of the easiest ways to maximize points on everyday and travel spending — without overwhelming fees.
