Good morning everyone. Remember that time in Friday’s newsletter when I told you that I’d be in Slovenia right now? Yea, that didn’t happen. I arrived in Serbia for my 15-hr layover, saw how beautiful Belgrade was, and decided to change my plans to spend a few extra days here. I’ve been to Slovenia and know I’ll be back plenty of times in the future (it may be my favorite country in Europe), so I decided to prioritize seeing somewhere new instead. Thanks to the flexibility of points and miles, making the switch only a few hours before my expected flight/hotel booking in Slovenia wasn’t difficult at all. Anyway, enough about my boring life. I have some great travel tips for you today:

🚂 TODAY ONLY: 25% discount on Amtrak tickets
Choo Choo! It’s been a while, but it’s time for another train promo. This one is urgent, folks. If you book train travel by TODAY, October 4th, you can save 25% off Amtrak tickets for travel through December 15th. Here are the deets:
- You must use promo code S25L to book travel by the end of the day today
- Travel must take place before the end of the day on December 15th
- Tickets are non-refundable
- There are a handful of routes that are not eligible for the discount, so be sure to read the fine print on the deal page.
Is this deal worth taking advantage of? Honestly, this is a pretty sweet deal. After doing a quick search I was able to find plenty of tickets on routes like New York City to Washington, D.C. for $24 one-way.
Now I’m someone who prefers to fly, even for shorter hauls. But if you account for the time you spend getting to/from airports, waiting to board, etc. you’re not spending that much more time on a route like NYC-Washington by taking the train instead. Given the low price tag, comfortable seats, free wifi, etc. I would jump on this if I had any plans for short or medium-haul travel in the U.S. within the next few months.
🏨 Triple points on Wyndham hotels
We don’t talk about Wyndham hotels very often, because… well… there are usually better things to talk about. But not today, friends. Not today. Until January 16th, 2023 you can earn TRIPLE points on stays at Wyndham properties around the world. There are some rules, but not many:
- You must register for the offer by January 13th
- Stays must be at least 2 nights
- There is a cap of 30,000 bonus points you can earn
- You must publicly state that Wyndham is the best hotel chain
Honestly, this is a pretty sweet deal. Triple points without many restrictions is pretty solid, especially with such a big timeframe to work with. I feel like many of the other hotel promos going on right now have “hoops” to jump through in order to really benefit, whereas Wyndham is making things quite simple. For simpletons like myself, this is really appealing. If you max this promo out and earn 30k points, you could book a 4-night stay at a property like this one in a great location in Mexico City, along with many others.
Overall, I’d add this to the (increasingly long) list of hotel promos to check out when booking a stay this Fall and Winter.
👻 Spooky airline story
I know Halloween isn’t for another few weeks, but apparently, American Airlines didn’t get that memo… On a flight last month, something very strange and, dare I say… spooky… happened. In the middle of the flight from Los Angeles to Dallas, moaning and groaning noises started to come over the PA system on board, leaving passengers, flight attendants, and even the pilots very, very confused. Nobody seemed to know where the sounds, pretty clearly made by a human voice, were coming from. At first glance, people would think that someone NOT on the plane had hacked into the PA system. This is impossible. An aircraft’s systems are entirely self-contained, and there is a big ‘ol 0% chance that someone on the ground got control over any onboard systems. So we can all rest easy. … or can we? Yes, we can. I just wanted to scare you a little. Anyway, flight attendants on board said that the same exact thing had happened on an earlier flight on the same plane, further adding to the mystery. So what the heck happened? Well, here are the possibilities:
- A flight attendant playing a bad joke. This was debunked because the flight attendants could all see each other clearly while this was happening. After all, this was a pretty small plane. Plus, why would a flight attendant risk their job for something so stupid?
- A passenger got a hold of one of the intercom phones and played a dumb prank. This also seems unlikely. Again, on such a small plane it would be very easy to tell if there was someone moaning into a phone…
- The pilots. Nope. No way. The chances of one pilot being reckless enough to do this are slim. The chances of BOTH pilots being in on it? Basically impossible. Plus, airlines can check their cockpit voice recorders, so there’s no chance they could ever get away with it.
So basically, I have no idea. APPARENTLY, the airline figured out what was happening and stated that this incident “will not happen again.” But they failed to state exactly what happened. My guess? They sacrificed a goat to the sky god and the problem was solved (that’s an inside joke for you readers who haven’t been around for a while). I know we have some AA staff who read the newsletter, so feel free to chime in if you have any intel on this, I’d love to know what happened.
